John Marselis Artist and Craftsman

John Marselis

Glass blower, Potter, Stained Glass Artist

John Marselis, a native of Massachusetts, received his education at Villanova University and graduated in 1967 with a BSME degree in Mechanical Engineering.

In 1975, he began a new endeavor and channeled his creativity into the art of glass and ceramics. He has been a stained glass artist for over 30 years and lives in Laurel Springs,NJ.

As a veteran stained glass artist, John has created many colorful leaded glass windows and lamps. In 1993, he served as an assistant to Painted Window artist  J. Kenneth Leap, Stained Glass Artist in Residence, at Wheaton Arts (formally Wheaton Village), Millville, NJ. John offers classes in stained glass to students interested in his field.

John's association with Wheaton Arts immerses him in a strong tradition of glass blowing. As a volunteer at the Dr. T.C. Wheaton Glass Studio, John narrates glass blowing demonstrations to visitors. He has served as an assistant to glass artist and Wheaton Glass Studio Manager Don Friel.

Having developed the essential glass blowing skills, he creates his own unique blown  glass vases and paperweights. John has found working with hot glass to be a dynamic and rewarding process which allows him to constantly experiment with a variety of forms.

As an extension of his work with glass, John began to delve into the art of  hand made ceramics and pottery in 2003. He shares a studio with fellow artists at Cumberland County College, The Clay College, Millville, NJ. His pieces consist of hand thrown stoneware and porcelain which are formed using a potter's wheel. His individual carved and textured pieces are then glazed and finished in gas, electric, and wood fired kilns.

John explores his chosen fields with an intense passion for the challenging media. His work can be found in many galleries and fine gift shops throughout, Camden County, Cumberland County, Cape May County, Atlantic County, and the Southern New Jersey region.
